The city of Vitoria, located at a crossroads, has been an important strategic point throughout history, both militarily and commercially and culturally. As the capital of the Basque Country (one of the autonomous communities - the large regions - of Spain), Vitoria-Gasteiz is home to the main political institutions of that community, among which is the Ajuria Enea, which means the House of Government.
