Stirling University includes several historic buildings that were built many centuries before the actual construction of the university. It was built based on Italian designs and allegedly inspired by the landscape around the castle. This construction or rebuilding of a similar building in the same place was done by James Graham (Graham Clan), first Marquis of Montrose.
