The large Greek square
In ancient Greece, the "agora" was normally rectangular and arched and was the main square of the city. The great agora of Segesta at 6,000 m2 gives us an idea of the enormous importance of this city. Today only some ruins remain and excavations are still being carried out to find what is left and study its composition. The agora consists of artificial terraces built at different levels across the uneven ground. It was enclosed by a large, public, Hellenistic building which was shaped like a "U" during the second century BC. It was 100 meters long and had two wings 20 meters each. Now you can only see fragments of the Doric columns of the portico.
