Great walk in the natural park

A great walk in the natural park close to Matala. We left our car in the car park next to monastery at Panoramiki Thea. We then followed the gravel road for a couple of kilometers. Turning on to the signposted track towards the gorge for a couple more kilometers. The walk through the gorge itself is short and easy. This gorge is very popular with climbers.

At the end of the gorge is a small monastery which overrun by goats. There is a pleasant bench next to the monastery under an old tree with a large bell. Beyond the monastery is a small sheltered pebble beach. This is a good location for snorkeling with good visibility and a rock arch to swim through. The sea was full of zooplankton, in particular Venus girdle. The rock wall is also home to an octopus.

After returning through the gorge we took a path over the cliffs. This path is marked with paint spots, you need to pay attention to avoid losing the trail and the terrain is rough underfoot. However, the views are spectacular and you really feel you have left civilization behind.

After arriving at another monastery we took the gravel track back to the car. This part is long and uninspiring but you will learn a lot about goat and sheep rearing in Crete.
