Afonso Henriques Memorial (2)

This monument is opposite the main door of the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, although in the center of the city, in the Largo da Misericordia, this is the only monument dedicated to Alfonso Henriques, Afonso I of Portugal, the first king of Portugal, hence its historical importance. The monument is a bronze sculpture depicting of Alfonso, wearing his battle dress and helmet, holding a sword aloft in his right hand and a giant shield in his left. It was cast in 1887.
