The Afar desert is unique

The Afar desert is unique and is nothing like other deserts, such as the Sahara, since instead of being invaded by sand it is full of salt, as it was previously a huge lake. Being covered by salt the landscape is completely white and spectacular. It seems incredible that something like this exists. When we got there the first thing we did was to get out of the car to see if the landscape was real. The salt tastes of salt and if you walk barefoot you realize how rough it is. If this place wasn't already unique and impressive, a few years ago it was made even more so when scientists found that, in many years time, it will become an ocean and, incredible as it may seem, the continent Africa will be split in two.

This is due to a crack found in the Horn of Africa that each year slowly grows. The temperatures are really unbearable, an average of 50 degrees, and so hardly anyone lives there. Afar nomadic groups live alone and engage in trade but, as you can imagine, it is extremely hard work being so arid and with such high temperatures.
