Route to the Teide

This is a must stop for all of you who are visiting Tenerife.

Since I was staying at the Costa Adeje, south of the island, I traveled from south to north along the TF-21 road in a rented car, from Vilaflor to Icod de los Vinos, crossing Las Cañadas. It is amazing to see how the landscape changes as you go up.

First you pass the forests of the Corona Forestal Natural Park, the biggest protected natural reserve of the archipelago (more than 46000 hectares).

When you pass the 2700 meters above sea level, the landscape drastically changes and the greenness is substituted by an arid landscape, almost lunar, composed by rocky formations, volcanic cones and craters.

Along the road you encounter different viewpoints that allow you to contemplate the majestic landscape that resulted from the eruptions of the Teide Volcano, which has an altitude 3,718, the highest peak of the country and named World Heritage by UNESCO.

The first three stops are: Boca de Tauce, Zapatilla de la Reina, Mirador de la Ruleta. Afterwards you reach the most famous place of Las Cañadas: Roques de García, from where you have a spectacular view of de Ucanca and where the Parador Nacional de Turismo is found.

2362 above sea level is the next stop, Tabonal Negro, a landscape formed by a sea of dark lava and obsidians. Here is the detour that takes you to the cable car that in 10 minutes travels 2.5 km and leaves you at the base of the crater.

I wasn’t able to go up because of the wind so I continued to the last viewpoint, Minas San José, the landscape I liked the most, since it is a vast extension of white color that looks like sand.

Following the TF-21, you start to go down to the northern part of the island, crossing once again the Corona Forestal. At times it looks like a sea of clouds, like cotton between the trees.

This trip is really worth it and it has impressive landscapes.

Silence

Excellent

If you are in Teide, you must go up by cable car to visit the upper part.

You go up about 3500 meters to a path that divides into two, one goes to the crater and the other one goes around it. If you want to go up to the crater you will need special written permission since it is a protected space and its access is very controlled. But the permission is free of charge.

When you up to the Teide, it is advisable to wear good sunscreen, also you should not run, since it is very high up and there is less oxygen in the air. It will tire you faster or affect people with respiratory problems.

The paths are not paved, so there are not so many visitors. It is great to walk a few kilometers and wait until you are alone. The feeling of being 3500 meters above sea level and in complete solitude is amazing. All will be silent; it’s just you, the volcanic rock and the wind.

It is a great place, and on a clear day you can even see the 7 islands of the archipelago in Canarias.

Don’t forget that it is strictly forbidden to deteriorate the surroundings, to pick up stones or to wander of the paths.

You Can See it From All Over the Island

The Teide is located at the center of the island, Tenerife, and you can see it from all over the island and it is impressive, it has a ring of clouds that decorate it permanently. It is 3718 meters above sea level and it is the highest peak in Spain, so you see why it shouldn’t be missed, right?

I will focus on my own experience, instead of giving you other specifics that can be found on the internet. It is a stratovolcano, and this is exactly what makes it so different, since the landscape is completely volcanic, full of rocks and caves, of black sand, different t o the one in the beaches of Tenerife, since it is made of little black stones. There are many different landscapes that can be admired in the national park, and they are all found in the same mountain.

The Teide is a must stop if you are in Tenerife. There is nothing as beautiful, enormous and impressive. From the top you can see incredible sunrises if you climb in the early morning, but you can’t reach the peak without a special permit, which you can arrange through its official webpage, with a maximum of ten people in each form.

If you get the permit to do the trail called “Telesforo Bravo”, they schedule it for a specific time and day. The hike from the platform is about half an hour long, and they let you do it for a maximum of two hours, since usually many people want to do it. However, there are those people that risk going up at night, and after 6 hours of hiking they get as a reward to see the sunrise from the highest peak in Europe. Also, at certain times, you can see how the shadow of the Teide blocks the island of La Gomera, impressive!
